Two bratty Muslim girls, ages 12 and 14, learned a very brutal lesson last year courtesy of the Swiss government rejected their citizenship applications after they threw a fit over being required to take swimming lessons alongside boys.
The girls claimed at the time that swimming alongside boys would violate their religious principles, but according to Stefan Wehrle, president of the naturalization committee, that excuse was simply not good enough.
“Whoever doesn’t fulfill these conditions violates the law and therefore cannot be naturalized,” she said about the decision to reject their applications, according to USA Today.
In January of this 2017, the European Court of Human Rights upheld the decision, according to The New York Times. However, they did offer some concessions to the Muslim girls, including the option to don body-covering swimwear.
In other words, Muslim immigrants who refuse to assimilate into Swiss culture and society will not get to stick around and become citizens, their age notwithstanding. How refreshing.
Something similar happened when two Muslim brothers reportedly refused to shake their female teacher’s hand over religious concerns. The government responded in the same manner then, by suspending the citizenship request issued by the boys’ father.
Unlike many of their European peers, as well as the United States, the Swiss people have a zero tolerance policy toward the inability to assimilate. Foreigners who want to set up shop in Switzerland must accept Swiss ways and cultural norms or be tossed out like refuse.
Such strict adherence to the rule might appear unfair to some, but it works to keep Swiss society homogeneous and thus avoids the multitudes of problems that multicultural societies typically spawn.
It works so well, in fact, that other countries would be wise to also adopt it.
